Rodri Set for Back Surgery: Is His Real Madrid Transfer Already at Risk?

Rodri will have to undergo surgery. The Spain captain, who lifted the World Cup on Sunday after a 1-0 victory over Argentina, is suffering from a back injury. According to The Athletic, the Manchester City midfielder requires an operation, although the date of the procedure and the length of his absence remain unknown. The 30-year-old is believed to have played throughout the tournament while experiencing pain.

Despite the problem, Rodri featured in all eight of Spain’s matches during the competition. It is another worrying physical setback for a player who has already been repeatedly disrupted by injuries over the past two seasons. The timing could hardly be worse, with Real Madrid reportedly preparing a major move to sign him this summer.

Back Surgery Could Complicate Real Madrid Move

Rodri is said to be open to returning to La Liga and would like to join Real Madrid, who are still searching for a true midfield organiser following Toni Kroos’ retirement. Although the squad contains several high-quality midfielders, none offers exactly the same profile as the German. Rodri is viewed as the player capable of controlling the tempo, protecting possession and directing the team from the centre of the pitch.

José Mourinho has reportedly made the Spanish midfielder a priority and wants him to become both the new leader of Madrid’s midfield and a major figure in the dressing room. Florentino Pérez had initially been reluctant to spend heavily on a 30-year-old, but Mourinho’s insistence and the team’s need for a playmaker are said to have changed the president’s position. A transfer could reportedly be negotiated for around €60 million, with Rodri’s Manchester City contract due to expire in June 2027.

However, Real Madrid will first need precise information about the severity of the injury and the expected recovery period before submitting a formal offer. Manchester City are also rebuilding their midfield after Bernardo Silva’s departure, while Mateo Kovacic and Nico González could also leave. The arrival of Elliot Anderson for around €135 million has fuelled further speculation about Rodri’s future, but his operation may now delay or even threaten one of the summer transfer window’s biggest potential deals.
