The defeat is cruel, but Benjamin Pavard mainly wanted to focus on the performance. Beaten by Paris Saint-Germain in a penalty shootout this Thursday during the Trophée des Champions (2-2, 1-4 on penalties), Olympique de Marseille came very close to an achievement. Despite the bitterness, the Marseille defender expressed his pride and optimism for the rest of the season.
In an interview with Ligue 1+, the French international did not hide his frustration while highlighting the quality of the collective performance. “With three minutes to go, we could have brought the trophy back to Marseille. We deserved to win, we were good in pressing, we had many chances. Unfortunately, that goal at the end really pisses us off,” he said, before emphasizing the team’s spirit.
The collective responded well
“I focus on the positives from this match and I am very proud of the players, both those who started and those who came on. We need to build on this match to keep going, I am proud of the team.”
This speech well summarizes the feeling on the Marseille side. OM delivered a solid, intense, and coherent performance but was punished by a cruel scenario in the very last seconds and then during the penalty shootout.
Despite the disappointment, this match should serve as a reference for the future. And the schedule does not allow for time to dwell: Marseille will return to competition on Tuesday, with a round of 16 match in the Coupe de France against Bayeux (Regional 1), an opportunity to move forward and validate the good intentions shown against PSG.
