RC Lens came very close to pulling off a huge transfer move last summer. In an interview with beIN SPORTS, Lens sporting director Jean-Louis Leca revealed that the northern French club seriously considered signing Hugo Lloris before eventually choosing Robin Risser.
Yes, Hugo Lloris nearly signed for RC Lens. Back in the summer of 2025, Lens were working on the young French goalkeeper’s arrival, but a physical concern created doubts inside the club. The Sang et Or feared Robin Risser might fail his medical due to a back problem.
Lens Considered a Stunning Move for Hugo Lloris
Faced with that uncertainty, Jean-Louis Leca imagined a completely unexpected scenario: convincing Hugo Lloris, currently playing for Los Angeles FC, to join Lens.
“We were worried about Robin because there was a back issue. We asked ourselves: what do we do if he fails the medical? Then we thought: why not Hugo Lloris? We wanted either the iconic France national team goalkeeper or the new one,” the Lens executive joked.
In the end, Robin Risser did sign for RC Lens and could now experience a huge moment in his young career. The goalkeeper will learn this Thursday whether he has been selected by Didier Deschamps for the next World Cup with the French national team.
