The FC Barcelona presidential election, scheduled for March 15, is shaping up to be highly charged. Joan Laporta stepped down from his position in order to run again, relaunching a campaign already closely followed inside the club. In the background, one name continues to dominate every discussion: Lionel Messi.
Back at Camp Nou in a surprise visit in November, the Argentine has never hidden his attachment to the club. But despite repeated signals from the candidates, he has stayed out of the process. Based in Miami since 2023, he is following the situation from afar and has not met any of the contenders, not even Laporta, with whom relations have been broken since his departure. There has still been no official tribute or farewell ceremony, and according to Sport, the matter remains sensitive.
Messi watching Barcelona election from a distance
Messi will not take part in the vote, as he is committed to an MLS match, and he does not plan to make any public statement. He prefers to keep a low profile and observe how the future leadership develops. More direct involvement is not ruled out in the medium term, especially during the next election in five years.
In the longer term, a return to Barcelona remains part of his plans after the end of his American adventure. A role within the sporting structure has been mentioned, provided he finds a president he trusts.
In the meantime, Messi remains focused on his season, while his name continues to serve as a major talking point in the electoral battle.
