Olympique de Marseille had a lot at stake in the race for the UEFA Champions League, but their trip to La Beaujoire turned into a disaster. Facing FC Nantes, the Marseille side collapsed after the break, conceding three goals in eight minutes despite a first half where Jeffrey De Lange had limited the damage.
Habib Beye cannot find a solution. OM are struggling and watching the Champions League slip away. Clearly frustrated when speaking to Ligue 1+, the coach did not hide his confusion: “There is no analysis because there was no game from us. We were empty. We were unable to give anything at all.”
Champions League hopes fading fast
Realistic about his team’s level, he also admitted that European ambitions are quickly slipping away: “That Champions League spot is far from what we are producing now. We cannot hope to get there with such performances.”
“We showed nothing mentally. I could have taken off 90% of my team at half-time. The performance is unacceptable. I am not well after what I saw.” An unusually harsh speech, far from the protection he had previously given his squad. “What I told them is that this time, I couldn’t protect them. Otherwise, I would be seen as a liar,” he added.
OM must now hope for slip-ups from their rivals to secure a European place. Despite the turmoil, the coach refuses to abandon ship: “Resign? No. I will never resign. If I am the problem, it’s not for me to decide. I will fight until the end.” Aware of the situation, he concluded with clarity: “My future does not matter. When you are OM’s coach, you must win. Today, I didn’t.” The end of the season promises high tension in Marseille, but Habib Beye’s fate already seems sealed.
