Despite the victory against Colombia (3-1), Didier Deschamps reacted strongly after a dangerous tackle on Michael Olise late in the match. It was more fear than harm for the attacking midfielder, but the French manager admitted he was deeply shaken by the incident.
Deschamps did not hide his anger after the game, criticizing the aggressive approach of the Colombian players in what was supposed to be a friendly encounter. He also pointed to the absence of VAR, which he believes played a role in the situation.
Deschamps slams excessive aggression in friendly match
“The Colombians were very aggressive. Since there was no VAR, it also helped them a bit,” he said, referring to the controversial challenge that could have had serious consequences for his player.
Clearly worried about Olise, Deschamps stressed the severity of the tackle at the end of the match: “On the last action, fortunately Michael Olise jumps, otherwise he’s left with only one leg.”
“If Michael doesn’t jump, his leg could have been broken. We are in a friendly match. We know what aggression is, but at some point, it goes a bit too far. I told the fourth official: ‘This isn’t American football.’”
