Pablo Longoria has openly stood by the signing of Mason Greenwood, a move that was heavily criticized in the summer of 2024. What ultimately tipped the balance, however, was the opinion of the Marseille president’s mother.
Mason Greenwood’s arrival at OM was a risky gamble, and Pablo Longoria hesitated for a long time. Speaking to The Telegraph, the club president said he thought it through at length, weighing both the sporting and human sides of the case, and even asked his mother for advice before making a final decision.
A Decision Guided by Family Advice
“Creating taboos in life is never positive. For us, it was a great sporting opportunity, but we analyzed very carefully what had really happened,” Longoria explained, revealing that he sought an opinion outside of football before deciding. “I called my mother. I wanted someone with no sporting interest, whose only goal is the well-being of her son as a man. With all the information, she told me: ‘do it.’”
The Spanish executive says he has no regrets and feels at peace with his choice, believing he made the right decision with all the facts in hand. “When you think you’re making the right decision, with the right level of information and from a human point of view, you own it. Mason is a good boy. Today, I sleep peacefully,” he added, saying he is “proud of his personal development” and of “his defensive commitment to the team.”
